Way of the Warrior

Spec script: by Robert C. Powers       Genre: World War II Action Drama

Inspired by:  The true story of Lieutenant Commander Jack Taylor, U.S. Navy Reserve, dentist, special operator for the O.S.S in World War II, considered to have been “the first SEAL.”

Logline: A warrior's code rages within a rugged American adventurer and he meets a German of like mind only to find they’re in love with the same woman; then, World War II flashes hot and they both must pay the price.

Synopsis: Vienna, 1938. Engines roar as aircraft race. At the controls of a Messerschmitt is TOM; a fearless American adventurer. In the competitor aircraft is GUNTHER, a hard as granite Luftwaffe officer. They share a common bond; the Warrior’s Code.

Tom and YOUNGER BROTHER BRETT meet ANNAMARIA, a stunning beauty.  Brett falls for her. She has eyes for Tom, but he hasn’t room for a woman in his fast-paced life. Or, so he thinks. But, Gunther claims Annamaria as his love. The Germans invade Austria. The Nazis attempt to arrest Annamaria; she has Jewish heritage. Tom and Brett fight them off, commandeer aircraft and escape with Annamaria. Gunther zooms to intercept; but, refuses to shoot them down once Tom tells him of the Nazi’s plans.

Gunther comes to America, sails on a yacht that rivals the one on which Tom, Annamaria and Brett are crew. They’re caught in a hurricane and Gunther’s yacht is lost. Tom’s sense of honor compels him to rescue his rival. They’re even. Tom and Annamaria discover their love; he can’t escape it. World War II intervenes.

Tom is a naval commando for the O.S.S., carries out a dangerous mission and is listed as killed in action. Annamaria mourns and marries Brett, now a bomber pilot. But, Tom has survived and is immediately given a secret mission; destroy the new German air defense command center. Tom and his team destroy their target. As he escapes, Brett’s bomber is shot down. Tom rescues Brett, operates and saves his life. Brett reveals he and Annamaria are married! They try to escape into Italy. Brett is killed by the Germans. Tom is captured and thrown into a Nazi concentration camp where he suffers torture and regret. War is suddenly not an adventure, but endless horror. As the Allies move into Austria near the end of the war, Gunther gets Tom out of prison and challenges him to a duel in the air. Tom faces Gunther in the ultimate consequence of their warrior obsession.

COVERAGE: Reminiscent of everything from Casablanca to Saving Private Ryan this story contains many of the staples of the World War II action drama. The characters are the best element in the script, especially the protagonist, Tom, and his nemesis, Gunther. The premise of “war quickly becomes less than glorious” is most successful. (Screenplay Readers, Professional Coverage Company, rated “Consider”)

“Way of the Warrior” is a fast-paced action story; filled with romance, surprises and suspense.  May I send the script?
