Vietnam War)
Synopsis:
LIEUTENANT HARRY QUESTER and his best friend LIEUTENANT JUNIOR GRADE TONY ZEE
are on duty aboard a destroyer that shells North Vietnamese logistic trucks
along the coast of Vietnam. Harry, strong, bold and capable, opposes the war;
sees little reason to sacrifice America lives for a far away country. But he
“does his duty”. Tony, an eager, free spirit, wants the adventure of serving in
a naval force commanded by his father, VICE ADMIRAL THOMAS ZEE.
Tony is assigned to “The River” in patrol boats whose mission is to prevent Viet
Cong supplies from moving from Cambodia to Saigon. He urges his Commander,
LIEUTENANT BEN BONES, to explore a mysterious canal, used by the Viet Cong on a
regular basis. The boat’s engine is clogged with vegetation and Tony goes over
the side to clear it. They are ambushed and Ben leaves Tony to be captured.
Harry learns of Tony’s capture and volunteers to go “in country”. His father,
also an Admiral, arranges for him to be assigned to Admiral Zee’s staff as the
Admiral’s Aide. Harry is not happy with the assignment and longs to be “on the
river” where he has a better chance of finding Tony.
Admiral Zee would like to do more to find his son, but his hands are tied
by orders not to go into Cambodia.
Harry meets AL CATTALIGNI, a Navy SEAL who is secretly preparing to go into the
forbidden territory of Cambodia to find and rescue Tony.
Harry goes on patrol on the river with Ben Bones. They are ambushed and Ben is
killed. Harry takes command of the patrol boats and saves the day. Admiral Zee
agrees to allow Harry to remain in command and he takes the boats to a new base
upriver. Harry meets a beautiful Vietnamese woman,
NGUYEN TRI LAI, and pursues
her for information about Tony, but it becomes more than that.
Can he trust her?
A new enemy, Mr. Ho, arrives to plan an attack on Saigon with incendiary rockets
called “fire canons”. He is based in Cambodia and holds Tony in captivity; plans
to use Tony to blackmail Admiral Zee to remove patrol boats (called “dragon
boats” by the Viet Cong) from the river to allow him to move fire cannons close
to Saigon.
Harry and Al go into Cambodia to rescue Tony, which leads to a danger filled
confrontation with Mr. Ho and the Viet Cong. A finale never to forget!
