BLOODY EIGHT

A Screenplay by Robert C. Powers                                 Genre: Contained MMA Thriller               Pages:  94

Logline:  A new and unique MMA fight to the death story; A veteran-turned-MMA champion reluctantly comes out of retirement to train a fellow Marine against a vicious fighter. (Writer is a quarter finalist in Screenwriting Competition. Coverage:  Fast-paced action and suspense. Dialogue is snappy and efficient.)

Synopsis: BRENT (SARGE) ROBERTS (28), former heavyweight MMA champion and Marine, watches as CODY ZEER (24), also a former Marine, faces SALADIN (27), “The Desert Avenger”.  Saladin almost kills Cody and spits on the Marine Corps tattoo on Cody’s arm. Sarge confronts Saladin.  Face-off, broken up by HIDEKI OTA (39), Cody’s Manager.  Sarge was Cody’s sergeant in Afghanistan where Cody was a frequent goof-off and Sarge rode him hard.  Sarge put Cody’s friend on patrol point where he was killed. Cody blames him for his friend’s death. In spite of his hate for Sarge, Cody saved Sarge’s life, pulling him from under a burning vehicle during a firefight. Sarge feels he owes Cody.

Hideki persuades Cody to take a rematch with Saladin. Saladin wants to fight Sarge, as Sarge refused to fight him before he retired.  In Saladin’s eyes, this was an insult.  Hideki persuades Cody to accept Sarge as his coach and takes them to isolated and vacant Bloody Eight Lodge where he has built a gymnasium with a training octagon.   Hideki takes away their cell phones...no outside distractions. Cody’s hate for Sarge transforms to intense rivalry and then grudging respect.  Hideki enters a “get rich” scheme with Saladin’s Manger, RASNI HABIB (40), to bring Cody and Saladin together for a fight to the death in front of rich guests. In reality, Cody is “bait” to cause Saladin and Sarge to meet in the octagon.

ELENA (25), Sarge’s fiancé, tries to find the lodge, assisted by her old high school flame, sports reporter BILL (HOPPY) HOPE (30).  Hideki hires HURRICANE RUBY (28), former female boxer and Hideki’s girlfriend to “keep an eye” on Cody and Sarge.  Sarge finds that Cody has post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) like that Sarge suffered after his injury in Afghanistan.  Sarge tells Hideki that Cody is not ready to fight, but Hideki tricks Cody into a fight with Saladin.

Ruby drugs Sarge and puts him in a prison room to keep him away from the octagon until the right time.  Sarge manages to escape to the outside and reveal to Elena and Hoppy where he is. He hears cheers of “SALADIN!” from the guests and gets it.  Just as Saladin is about to kill Cody, Ruby, at Hideki’s cue, goes to release Sarge and finds him coming back into the lodge. She thrusts him into the gymnasium. Sarge realizes that Hideki has tricked him into fighting Saladin…and it’s to the death.  Elena and Hoppy find the lodge, but Sarge must fight to save them all in an action packed, surprise finale.
